A flexible sidebar and widget system for phpBB

Sego Sidebar & Widget Manager extends the standard phpBB interface and allows you to place information blocks and widgets around the main forum content.

It is more than a traditional left or right sidebar. The extension provides four independent widget areas:

Top · Left · Right · Bottom

Each area can be enabled or disabled independently, while blocks can be arranged directly from the Administration Control Panel.

Four widget areas

Administrators can use the available areas in any required combination:

• Top — a horizontal area above the main forum content;
• Left — a traditional left sidebar;
• Right — a traditional right sidebar;
• Bottom — a horizontal area below the forum content.

The main forum area automatically adapts to the active sidebars. If the Left or Right sidebar is disabled or collapsed, the forum content expands to use the available space.

1 to 4 cells in the Top and Bottom areas

The Top and Bottom areas can each be divided into 1–4 equal cells.

Each cell is an independent widget location and can contain one or more blocks.

For example, you can place four different widgets in a single row, use two larger information blocks, or display one block across the entire available width.

Drag & Drop management

Block placement is managed directly from the ACP.

Blocks can be moved:

• within the same area;
• between cells;
• between the Left and Right sidebars;
• between the Top, Bottom and sidebar areas.

The system stores the order and location of the blocks.

Block Library

The integrated Block Library provides the available widget types from which administrators can build their own layout.

Block instances can be created and placed in different areas of the page.

Available information and utility blocks include:

• Calendar;
• Recent Posts;
• Recent Topics;
• Who Is Online;
• Birthdays;
• Forum Statistics;
• Newest Member;
• Search;
• Clock;
• Welcome block;
• Gallery and other supported blocks.

Independent area controls

All four widget areas have their own enable and disable settings.

You can use:

• both Left and Right sidebars;
• Left only;
• Right only;
• Top and Bottom areas;
• or another suitable combination.

When both sidebars are disabled, the central forum content automatically expands to the full available width.

Collapsible sidebars

Visitors can collapse the Left and Right sidebars.

The selected state is stored locally by the browser, allowing users to keep their preferred page layout on subsequent visits.

Responsive layout

A dedicated layout is provided for narrow screens.

The main forum content remains the priority and is displayed first, while the Right information sidebar is placed below it. The Top, Bottom and Left areas are hidden on narrow screens to keep the mobile interface clean and easy to use.

Integrated Style Editor

The appearance of the Sidebar can be configured directly from the ACP.

The Style Editor supports the different widget areas and provides controls for backgrounds, borders, separators and other visual properties without requiring manual CSS editing for normal configuration.

Lightweight architecture

Sego Sidebar & Widget Manager uses server-side rendering and the native phpBB architecture.

The main page structure is generated on the server, while CSS handles the layout. JavaScript is used only where interaction is required, such as drag & drop management in the ACP and collapsing the sidebars.

This approach keeps the page structure simple and predictable without relying on a heavy client-side page builder.

Sego Sidebar & Widget Manager does not replace the standard phpBB architecture or turn your forum into a complex page builder.

Instead, it adds a flexible system for placing information blocks around the main content while keeping the forum itself at the center of the experience.
