Description

phpBB Sego Social is a social distribution of phpBB Sego that combines the traditional forum structure with a modern social network interface.

Social does not replace phpBB with a separate publishing system. Forums, topics, posts, users and photographs remain part of the standard phpBB structure, while the social interface provides an additional way to access and interact with this content.

Social Feed

The central element of phpBB Sego Social will be the community activity feed.

It will display user publications, forum topics and posts, photographs and other community activity. Users will be able to follow what is happening across the forum in a familiar social feed format without constantly moving between individual sections.

Items in the feed remain connected to their original phpBB content: a topic remains a regular forum discussion, while a photograph remains part of the gallery and its corresponding album.

Publishing and Interaction

Social is planned to provide a quick way to publish new content directly from the social page.

Users will be able to publish text, photographs and links, open discussions and interact with content posted by other members.

Familiar social actions are planned for publications, including Likes, comments and the ability to share a link to the content.

Profile and Navigation

The social page uses a three-column layout with the main activity feed in the center and sidebars on both sides.

The left sidebar brings together user functions and existing phpBB features: profile, private messages, friends, groups, photographs, bookmarks, personal topics and posts, drafts, unread and new posts, as well as quick access to the traditional forum.

This makes the social interface an additional entry point to the existing functionality of phpBB.

Community Information

The right sidebar is intended for dynamic community information.

It can include users currently online, events and calendar information, latest photographs, popular topics, birthdays and other community widgets.

The sidebar structure is planned to be modular, allowing administrators to choose which elements are appropriate for their community.

Forum and Social Network

The main idea behind phpBB Sego Social is to avoid creating two independent systems.

Users will be able to browse the community through the traditional forum structure of sections and topics or through the social activity feed. In both cases they will be working with the same content and the same users.

This approach preserves the advantages of a traditional forum — structured discussions, search and long-term accumulation of information — while providing a more modern way to follow current community activity.

Design

phpBB Sego Social will be developed around Sego Modern. The social interface is planned as a dedicated three-column layout with a central activity feed and two sidebars.

The interface will be adapted for both light and dark variants of Sego Modern as well as for mobile devices.

Integration with phpBB Sego

Social is planned as part of the overall phpBB Sego architecture and will be able to use existing project components such as the extended Editor, Gallery, user profiles, Main Menu, sidebars and other features.

Where possible, new social functionality will be implemented through separate extensions, keeping the phpBB core and existing components independent.

Project Status

phpBB Sego Social is currently planned. The presented interface is a concept for the future distribution, so the final feature set and implementation may change during development.

The goal is to create a social interface on top of phpBB while keeping the forum a fully functional forum rather than turning it into a separate copy of an existing social network.
